Why is security important? The value of our information is increasing In recent years information has become increasingly important to business operations. Arguments have even been made that the "information age" has elevated information to the level of currency. We can see evidence of this in an act as simple as a credit card transaction over the internet. When we buy online, we are able to use information (e.g. our credit card number and expiration date) to make a purchase. As you can see, this information is very valuable as it can be exchanged for goods and services. A situation has developed in which this information must be kept secure and secret because of its value. This concept can be applied far and wide across the spectrum of business communication to illustrate the increasing importance of information and why we need to keep it secure. Computer security threats are increasing Statistics show that computer security threats and attacks are rising dramatically. As the use of computers pervades our society, we must create ways to secure our information in much the same way we have secured our material assets in the past. For example, a jeweler would not think of leaving his store unlocked overnight. If he did so, none of the people passing by would know that the door was not locked and so a break-in may be unlikely. However, the jeweler still finds it prudent to "lock up". Sadly, many computer systems today are left "unlocked", leaving them vulnerable for opportunistic attackers to come in and gain access to a businesses' valuable information and resources.
