Securing your wifi hotspot can help stop SPAM

Unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots are everywhere. Big box retailers like Best Buy and Circuit City have their shelves stocked with wireless access points that are easy to setup but do not prompt users to secure them. The resulting unsecured wireless networks are attractive to spammers because they provide an entry point for spam that is difficult to trace back to them; difficult but not impossible.

A California man has recently been convicted under the federal CAN-SPAM act of using this methodology to send thousands of unsolicited emails containing content of an adult nature. This is yet another reason to seek professional assistance when setting up a wireless network, especially one that will be used for business. If you would like to find out more about securing your wireless network please contact Newmind today...

Spyware effects up to 1/3 of computers on internet

A report released, jointly by EarthLink and Webroot indicates that up to a third of internet-connected computers may be running "spyware" software.

Spyware is software that runs in the background on a users PC and records information about their internet surfing habits and transmits it to a third-party. The third-party is usually interested in selling this information, however, it is also possible to use it as a means to gain access to a persons computer or internet accounts. At worst, it is possible in some cases to use the software to steal the identies of users.

Spyware usually finds it's way onto a users computer when the user visits a website that is running malicious installation code. Very often the user is not notified that the software has been installed on thier system.

Newmind is active in auditing clients systems for spyware activity, returning systems to a clean state, and putting safe-guards in place to protect the privacy of our clients in the future. If you are interested in having your systems audited for spyware please, contact Newmind today.

Small airports have the opportunity to use Wi-Fi wireless internet access to raise their profile with business travellers as well as with airlines that they would like to convince to offer local service.
